Kick Out the Jams, Genderfuckers! (Cont.)
strand in rock that's always pushed
the boundaries-- and many bands have used gender ambiguity/androgyny
as part of their image if not always their lifestyle.
For every Boy George or Little Richard, there's a Kid
Rock or a David Allen Coe. Rock 'n' roll has always made
a perfunctory nod that indicated that androgyny is sexy
at best, or at least interesting at worst. Lou Reed sang
about 'walking on the wild side'; Tony!Toni!Tone! sang
about Annie May living a fast life on the edge, Aerosmith
said that 'the dude looks like a lady,' and the Replacements
wrote a song called Androgynous that prophetically asked
'tomorrow who's gonna fuss?'"
Likewise, Lipstick Conspiracy's lyrics back up their convictions.
The band has dedicated their song "Living In America"
to Gwen Arajuo; the song is intended to honor transgender
victims of oppression and prejudice. Even the song structure
serves this purpose with a "moment of silence"
section where atmospheric guitar solos and a moody keyboard
section provide time for musical meditation. |
